2013 Annual Training Conference
Preparing For The Future, Longing For The Past
November 18 - 22, 2013
In the 1940's and 1950's, as Americans embraced the
future with great hope after World War II, they entertained themselves with cinematic visions of
doomed detectives, mysterious femme-fatales, and the underbelly of humanity - corruption, deceit,
greed, and mean streets. Film Noir portrayed a world of broken and bitter people,
desperate for hope in a bleak world.
Similarly, in 2013, labor and employee relations
professionals long for the past before the Great Recession and desperately hope for a future
without layoffs, pay cuts, bankruptcy, and underfunded pension plans. But we know that in labor
relations, like Film Noir, nothing is as it appears. The solutions needed for a brighter
future may not be what we expect. And although our future is getting brighter, it will undoubtedly
be more complex and nuanced.
CALPELRA's 2013 Annual Conference may not offer
you a murky morality tale, Venetian blinds, dark alleys, rain-slicked streets, or femme-fatales, but it
will give you the skills to handle the surprising twists of the more complex and nuanced labor and
employee relations issues in our brighter future.
Over its 38 year history, CALPELRA's Annual Training
Conference has brought together management labor relations and human resources professionals
to listen, interact, and learn from experts and each other. As labor relations and human resources
professionals are coping with the effects of the economy, working to find creative ways of handling
dwindling budgets and continued demands, and dealing with particularly difficult labor contract
negotiations, the training and networking opportunities CALPELRA's Annual Training Conferences
offer are now more necessary and helpful than ever.
